How you manage your shopping depends on so many things where you live, how near and accessible your shops are, whether or not you can drive, what help friends, relatives, or other people can give, what your finances are like. It depends too on what problems the arthritis lumbers you with at any particular time. Shopping around and impulse buying, once taken for granted, may have to give way to a carefully thought-out plan of campaign. This chapter looks at ideas from which to pick and choose to suit your needs.
Plan ahead
As always! Use the brain to ease the strain. Keep a spiral-bound notebook in the hall, in the kitchen, in your bag. Post-it notes, too. Jot down what you'll need as supplies run out. That way you'll avoid forgetting things and having to use your limited energy rations to go back for them.
Bulk buy if feasible and affordable, and if you can solve carrying and storage problems. Would one or more neighbours go halves with you on special bulk buy offers? Consider bulk buying small non-food items as well as large, for instance before the bad winter weather sets in, stock up on 'toiletries' shampoo, soaps, face cream, toothpaste, sanitary tampons, etc, and 'stationery' envelopes, paper, stamps, greetings cards, etc.
Stocking up on freezer food and other convenience foods helps cut down on shopping trips and ensures you've food in stock for any housebound periods. Some firms offer home delivery of ready-made meals (see 'Ready-made meals and food specials', later). Make use of any local delivery services, especially for heavy goods. Some supermarkets offer a home delivery service for food you've selected in person in store. Or try supermarket shopping online (see separate section, later).
Lots of shopping, and 'window shopping', can be done from your armchair, at home. More about that in a moment. For any unavoidable 'shopping around', make your phone and computer work for you. Find out about prices, store access, etc, before you leave the house. If you're phoning, time it for when you know the shop won't be too busy.
Where to shop in person?
Local shops may be nearer and more accessible, though sometimes more expensive. However, friendly staff who know your needs are a bonus, and some local shops do still make home deliveries. Town centre shops can pose problems with parking and walking. Getting a Blue Badge may help. If ramped pavement kerbs would be a help but aren't sited where you (and other people too) need them, write to the local council asking if they can do something and contact your local DIAL and Access Group too.
Some shops without public lifts have a staff or goods lift you can use on request, for instance in Boots, Marks & Spencer, and Littlewoods. Some shops perversely have only one escalator, going up. However, when I asked in one such shop if there was any way of coming down other than the steep stairs, they said 'yes'. All I had to do was ask, and the escalator would be stopped, and put into reverse. Wonderful! So it's always worth asking.
Shopping centres and superstores, with everything under one roof, have certain advantages, though can sometimes prove too large if you have walking problems. Writing a list beforehand avoids wasting time and energy (and cuts down on impulse buying), especially if you can write the list in the order you're likely to come across the goods.
Superstores get horribly crowded, so avoid peak times if possible, especially Friday and Saturday. Phone to ask when the quiet times are. Using a shallow supermarket trolley instead of a deep one may ease some bending problems. If you shop alone and need help loading and unloading a trolley, or reaching up and down, phone in advance to see if an assistant could come round with you: at quiet times this can sometimes be arranged. When her local Gateway supermarket ran out of special trolleys for disabled people, one shopper with arthritis was given the services of a member of staff to go round with her to pick items from inaccessible shelves. The manager said the service was available to anyone who asked.
My little electric scooter is ideal for whizzing around superstores. However I still need someone with me to load and unload it from the car, it can't carry much, and I still need to overcome the reaching up and down from shelves problem The great advantage is that I can see just what's available, instead of having to guess from my seat at home. An occasional refresher trip helps keep me up to date for when I'm writing the list for my gallant friend who normally does the shopping.
Paying
Avoid purses with a tight catch and press fastening. A child's long flexible pencil case was my solution, the sort that opens with a zip. Ask the cashier to count the change into your purse (while you watch carefully) rather than into your uncooperative hand. Or ask "Can I take the change from your hand, please?" Or use debit or credit cards.
Carrying shopping
Avoid carrying heavy bags or handbags: they'll strain and damage your joints. Use shoulder bags and shopping trolleys on wheels. Cycle shops sell good-sized shoulder bags. You can also get a 'hands free bag holder' a wide adjustable strap which distributes the weight of heavy bags across back and shoulder (eg from Promedics).
Always keep with you a spare plastic bag or two 'just in case' those with big handles so you can slip them over your forearm instead of having to grip them. Some shopping trolleys have built-in seats, so you can take a rest now and again. DLF's factsheet Choosing walking equipment includes household and shopping trolleys, walking trolleys with seat attached, tripods, etc, and the Youreable shop stocks a variety of trolleys. One sturdy brand is Sholleys. Some trolleys have two wheels, others four, and some are foldable, some not. Some are better pushed, some better pulled. Handle designs vary a lot, so look at different types before buying. If necessary enlarge the handle to improve your grip.
Stopping to rest
Try a shopping trolley with a seat, or a folding stool/stick seat. The Youreable shop stocks a variety of folding seats and stools. Try asking for a seat if you need one. A while ago Age Concern launched the 'We Care with a Chair' campaign, to encourage shopkeepers to provide a chair for elderly or disabled people and display a sticker showing a shopkeeper offering a chair.
Loos and getting caught short
Needing a loo can be a nightmare when you can move only slowly and with difficulty. Watch what you drink before going out. Avoid drinks like coffee or tea or cola drinks which are 'diuretics'. By definition they make you want to pass urine more frequently!
Most superstores now have loos. Larger chain stores like Marks & Spencer will let disabled people use a staff loo on request. If you look fairly healthy (as many of us deceptively do) you might need to explain briefly "Could I possibly use the staff loo/toilet? I've got rheumatoid arthritis and have problems walking far " If you're shy about asking see if your doctor would write a short note for you to produce when needed. Or you can get a free 'toilet urgency' card from the Continence Foundation (see 'first line information' on their website), or from Incontact.
Public loos aren't always accessible. The National Key Scheme (NKS) for toilets for disabled people provides you with a key to unlock around 7000 'disabled' loos in the UK. Ask your local social services for a key (there may be a small charge), or apply to RADAR (small cost), who also publish a national list of these special loos, handy if you're going on a long journey.
For some people getting caught short becomes such a problem it stops them going out. Why not think about wearing a discreet yet efficient incontinence garment or using a discreet urinal (eg in the car)? Have a look at what's available in commercial catalogues listed in chapter 20, and see my note there about portable urine bottles for men and women (in the Chester-care/Homecraft-Rolyan catalogue). Look too at the DLF's factsheet Clothing for continence and incontinence, which has lots of useful tips, even if your problem seems fairly minor. Also useful information on the websites or by post from the Continence Foundation and Incontact.
Help from other people
Many of us have to rely on friends and relatives to shop for us. My wonderful friend loathes shopping, but armed with my list, whizzes round the local supermarket for me every fortnight or so. I manage on my own to get to a smaller local shop now and again.
Some friends really enjoy the chance to help, and the chance to spend someone else's money for them! Those of us who go out to work may find workmates willing to pick up odds and ends in the lunch-hour. One regular visitor to the local fruit and veg market knows I'll go halves with her on any particularly good special offer she comes across. Train your friends (subtly) to let you know which shops they're off to so you can place an order. Keep it within reason though don't go asking them to take a parcel to the post office for you when they're doing their darndest to avoid wasting precious lunchtime minutes on post office queues.
Ask people to tell you about special offers they come across, and to bring back any free leaflets. To help when you're compiling a shopping list keep yourself informed of what's in season, and therefore cheaper. Some local free papers have a weekly good buys column, and many cook books contain 'what's in season when' guides.
Some local social services Home Care schemes will do some shopping for you if you're badly disabled and there's no one else to help. Or someone from a local voluntary organisation (eg youth group, good neighbour scheme, RSVP, WRVS or British Red Cross) may be able to help. Find out through your social worker or OT, your Citizens' Advice Bureau, your local council for voluntary service, or DIAL.
Communicate your access needs
Help yourself and others too other YPAs (younger people with arthritis), mothers with prams, elderly people, by writing in with suggestions for improvements. Join your local Access Group if there is one.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), stores and shops should make a reasonable effort to help disabled people in the services they provide, and in making adjustments to overcome any physical barriers to access. Write to stores about seats, creches, heavy doors, access problems; if necessary you could remind them of their responsibilities under the DDA.
Write to the local council about access and mobility problems, eg ramped pavements, parking facilities, road crossings, public loos. Copy your letters to the local MP/councillor. Comment on any reported planning proposals does the proposed new shopping centre have loos, rest areas, seats, mother-and-baby facilities, level access? Keep your letters polite and to the point. Avoid being aggressive. Keep the reader on your side! Many omissions or hazards aren't intentional, but may simply be due to a lack of awareness.
Shopmobility and special schemes
Various schemes now exist to help people with mobility problems shop, though some are limited in the hours and days available. In some areas there are excellent shopmobility schemes, lending out manual or powered wheelchairs or powered scooters to anyone who needs help with mobility; you do not need to be registered disabled to use the scheme. For details contact the charity National Federation of Shopmobility (tel: 08456 442 446, email: Info@shopmobilityuk.org), or find out what's available locally from an access guide, DIAL or local tourist information office.
Some Dial-a-Ride or similar community transport schemes have regular shopping trips to specific superstores or high streets. Some shops arrange special opening hours for disabled people, especially just before Christmas. You'll hear through the local newspaper or radio, or perhaps if you're on the social services register of disabled people. Ask your local DIAL or social services what's available.
Your own home 'shopping centre'
You can get practically anything by post, phone or online nowadays. As shops get unbearably overcrowded even for the fittest of the fit, mail order becomes ever more attractive. I certainly don't know how I'd manage without! Here are just some of the things I've bought by mail order over the years clothes, shoes, garden equipment/ seeds/ plants, all sorts of presents, toys, stationery, toiletries, cosmetics, exotic herbs and spices, CDs, books, handcraft materials, kitchen gadgets and equipment, disability gadgets, furniture, wines, buttons, catering-size packs of Clingfilm and aluminium foil, dress fabrics and patterns, theatre tickets, maps, etc, etc!
Set up your own home shopping centre, using an old shopping bag or a cardboard box. Into it throw any promising leaflets or catalogues or small ads or newspaper/ magazine items you and friends and family come across. Let everyone know you're a leaflet addict! My cardboard box has now become tidier boxes on a shelf, housing a vast collection of leaflets through which I take a very enjoyable armchair shopping trip whenever I want. Arranging the leaflets and brochures alphabetically makes it easier to find what I want. Even doing the Christmas present shopping is now a positive pleasure.
You could just keep a list of favourite shopping websites, but I think it's more fun to have a collection of leaflets which you can dip into whenever and wherever you want. The leaflets are often better illustrated than the websites, especially those for smaller firms and charities. For the best of both worlds, keep a favourite websites list too.
There are some pitfalls to be wary of. Some of the traditional mail-order houses produce bulky catalogues, very awkward for arthriticky fingers. They pester you to become an agent, which can be complicated and involves you, in turn, having to pester people to buy from you, and to pay up when the goods arrive. You're responsible for all payments, and for sending back any unsatisfactory goods. These I avoid.
Admittedly I do know of one YPA (younger person with arthritis) in a residential home who actually enjoys being an agent as a hobby. If you wanted access to the vast choice in one of those catalogues without the hassle of becoming an agent yourself, you could ask for the address of an agent nearby, but stress very firmly that you don't want to become an agent yourself, and keep a copy of your letter as evidence.
I keep instead to the smaller leaflets and catalogues for the personal shopper, some of them produced by charities and high street stores, plus anything else that catches my eye in magazines and newspapers. Examples of just a few follow. Don't hesitate too to contact a manufacturer if you've seen an ad for something that takes your fancy but just can't be found. By doing that I managed to get a special bra for myself from one manufacturer and from another, the address of a cordless beard trimmer supplier for my boyfriend's Christmas present.
If the flood of mail and leaflets gets out of hand and you want to stop it contact the Mailing Preference Service, operated by the DMA who as well as operating the various consumer preference services provide advice on home shopping (tel: 020 7291 3300, email: dma@dma.org.uk).
Know your consumer rights
Before you do any mail-order shopping, check on your legal rights, for instance:
Look back at 'consumer advice' in chapter 20. Follow these guidelines, too:
Inclusion in this book does not necessarily imply recommendation. Always check prices, availability, and suitability before parting with any money. Some of the products I mention may no longer be available.
I've mostly avoided listing here the very well-known firms, as their details are usually easy to find. Even if you don't have internet access, most of those I've included offer mail order by phone or by post. Scattered around this book you'll find information about other firms offering mail order, for instance:
Some charity catalogues
Many charities now sell a colourful range of items not just at Christmas, but all year round. You can make surprisingly useful discoveries tucked away in some of their leaflets. For instance in Unravel Mills I found a pouffe, which became for me a wonderfully firm and portable 'seat raise'/ cushion. Most charities listed also have online shops, but if you don't have internet access, most offer mail order by phone or by post too.

Supermarket shopping online
Waitrose Direct and Ocado topped a Which? satisfaction survey in March 2004 for offering the best combination of ease of use and handy features in their online delivery services. Several other supermarkets offer similar services.
Use the postcode finder on a supermarket's website to see if it delivers to your area. You can usually browse without registering, but you'll need to register if you want to shop. Check the cost of delivery, and whether you have to spend a minimum amount. And if you spend over a certain amount, some stores offer free delivery. You'll need to book a delivery slot timed to suit you the delivery charge may vary according to the particular day and time you choose. You pay by credit or debit card in the secure checkout section of the website.
When your order is delivered, the driver should point out to you any products substituted for anything you ordered that was out of stock. Some drivers are particularly helpful with the delivery, especially if you explain that you have a disability.
